HCL Foundation celebrates ‘Power of One’ carnival

Feb 01, 2018

Power of One is HCL’s powerful employee volunteering and payroll giving program as well as the cornerstone of HCL Foundation’s work for positive urban transformation.

Noida: The idea of  Power of One is based on the belief that all we need is just one rupee per day or one British Pound or US Dollar per week and one hour, one day, one month or one year of community service from HCL employees to make a significant difference in society.

It is the contribution by each individual at HCL that powers “Power of One”. It is a platform created by HCL Foundation to further their contribution to nation building as proud HCLites.

Driven by a dedicated group of HCL Community Champions, employees can make important contributions to communities through various activities: teaching, rehabilitation, counselling, mentoring, training and sensitization programs. These efforts address a broad range of development issues including education, health, livelihoods and environment.

Power of One consist of two key components:

Daily Payroll Giving – Employees are encouraged to contribute one rupee every day in India, one US Dollar per week in US, one British Pound per week in UK, and so on. These funds are directed to key initiatives and are over and above the CSR spends of HCL Foundation and mapped separately.

Community Championship – Depending on their time, interests and expertise, HCL Foundation supports employees to volunteer on community service projects.

Power of One ensures active and regular financial support and participation by HCL employees in humanitarian and developmental projects. It enables them to act on issues they care about and become valuable agents of change in making the communities where they live and work a better place.

·So far, 50,000 HCL employees have participated in the Power of One & devoted approximately 150,000 hours this year

·Over 200,000 people across India have benefitted from the employee volunteering efforts

·100 HCL employees have adopted 100 schools across 12 states positively impacting 50,000 students

Following are key Power of One initiatives:

·My School - Giving back through community service. Through this initiative, employees can become a friend, guide and role model through inclusive social development activities implemented in a school of his or her choice. This project uses a highly specialized baseline tool that leads to a strategic school development plan for each one of 100 schools under this project. Through a structured approach, the plan is prepared and implemented in conjunction with school authorities, children, communities, parents, HCL employees and other stakeholders. HCL Foundation partners with specialised NGO partners for ensuring a high quality My School project.

·My Scholar - Launched in late 2016, My Scholar is a long-term scholarship program to support the education of talented and hardworking children from low-income families. Eligible beneficiaries include children from HCL Foundation’s project areas, or from HCL support staff, including housekeeping, transport, security and other such allied support services.

Through mentoring and financial support, the annual scholarship program facilitates both higher secondary as well as higher education for 100 deserving students. The goal is to support them stay in school, continue their education and find rewarding employment. Rupee 1 that is donated each day by close to 35,000 employees, is used to award these scholarships and provide quality support to the scholars.

·Sports For Change: The aim of “Sports for Change” by HCL Foundation is to support and encourage sports skills and nurture talent through participation among the students of HCL supported My School and My Community (Gurukuls and Yuvakendra) projects. These children belong to economically compromised backgrounds and have no access to basic sports facilities.

Power of One’ Carnival

The carnival was a celebration of the unique employee volunteering and payroll giving initiative of HCL – The Power of One. Focused at promoting positivity and togetherness in the work space, this initiative aims at strengthening the corpus, used for awarding scholarships to the meritorious students from economically challenged backgrounds. Employees of HCL contribute one rupee per day to this corpus. The programme also encourages employees to volunteer and engage in community service projects.

The carnival was a fun-filled day with varied cultural performances and activities led by children from HCL Foundation’s project locations, stalls by NGO partners, experiential workshops, various engagement activities, music & dance.

As part of the carnival, employee volunteers were recognised and rewarded for their contributions of time and monetary commitment. During the Scholarship Ceremony under the ‘My Scholar Program’, 72 scholarships were awarded in the presence of their families.

Through the Carnival, HCL Foundation showcased the work carried out in the community engagement programmes through posters, nukkad nataks, flash mobs, exhibits, working models of projects undertaken.

Stalls were set up for all participating NGOs to display their work. A special display corner too was set-up for the students where they could display their science models and art and craft exhibits. A talent corner too was set-up where employees and selected students from centres could display their skills via theatre, dancing, singing and other avenues.
