Creating awareness for women’s safety through workshops

Feb 22, 2018

CrossBow Miles strives to empower India for women’s safety by enabling women to become change makers for themselves.

New Delhi: Srishti Bakshi, Founder and campaign champion for CrossBow Miles is now in Delhi with the team, as they continue to drive their efforts with meaningful conversations through on ground workshops across Delhi.

The team has covered over 2800 kms with over 70 workshops on various topics focused on creating awareness for women’s safety and empowerment through financial and digital literacy. The campaign involves an on-foot journey through India undertaken by Srishti, covering 3800 kms from Kanyakumari to Srinagar to make India safer and better for women.

Across Delhi, the team will be conducting a host of workshops on topics like I am a change maker, Know your rights, Women empowerment, Gender sensitization, Financial and digital literacy, Hygiene, Sanitation, Leadership amongst others. In addition to the workshops, the team will be conducting its landmark wall art activity on February 25, 2018 at Sarojini Nagar; as well as the well-received night walk on March 4, aimed at reclaiming the night as a safe place for women of Delhi. Srishti and her team will again be meeting the President of India, Ram Nath Kovind, to discuss the journey so far, the issues and ways to find a solution.

Speaking on her journey and the campaign, Srishti Bakshi said, “Our journey has been extremely insightful and has redefined our understanding of various issues faced by women across India. What we have gathered will be presented to policy makers in a white paper and to the masses in the form of a documentary.”

Through the journey, team CrossBow Miles has found that the issues in Delhi are similar to the rest of India. There is a common thread of suffering across the country that results in domestic violence due to alcohol, dowry harassment and early marriages. Further there are grave crimes like rape, acid attacks and molestation and the team has met with survivors who have become every day heroes in their own right. Deep seated misogyny often mutes women in India from using their voice to speak out. Interestingly, it has been observed that education and financial status have no bearing on violence against women and gender discrimination at home.

Speaking on the recent announcements for women safety in Delhi, Srishti further added “While police strengthening is the need of the hour, it is also necessary for us to encourage women to use the power of their voices to ride the wave of change. We are motivated by the recent announcements on the safety App, the self-defence classes, the additional buses, the helpline number to name a few and hope that the women are educated and made aware of the different options empowering them. It is our belief that if you desire change, only then will you make it happen.”

Through this walk, Srishti and her team will conduct approximately 110 workshops. From the South to North of India, the states that have been the on route for her entire walk are Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi; with Punjab, Haryana & J&K as the remaining three states to complete this journey. Srishti Bakshi is an Empower Women Champion for Change** 2016-2017. The campaign so far has resulted in Srishti engaging with over 25000 people in the last 158 days, including students, teachers, district collectors, activists & state police. With over 62 million steps clocked on the CrossBow Miles app and with over 2800 kms covered by Srishti on foot, this campaign has been unfolding a host of benefits to women and children across different causes.
